With the dawn of the internet, new exciting things are happening that your parents would have never dreamed of. The internet has made it possible for anyone to follow their passion with only hard work and sweat. One of the best business models that the internet caters to is teaching/information.
People are searching for answers to everything. Whether it’s “what to get guys” or the “fastest animal on earth”, people are looking for answers to their problems. Why can’t you be the answer? This model opens many opportunities for you to be the expert on your passion.
It’s all about dominating your niche online. Copyblogger has a great post on explaining how to dominate your niche, giving great insight by telling you to be territorial instead of hierarchical. Brian also shows in that post how he was able to take the teaching model (e.g. teaching people how to be an awesome copywriter) and make it a great business model. The possibilities are endless, all you have to do is put your determination and hard work into something and you can succeed in life.
Why this model tends to work
One of the best advantages to the teaching model in there is very little overhead. All you have to do is set up a blog and start pumping out great content. You’ll have to know your stuff and what you’re talking about or else you’ll eventually become recognized for your lack of good information and people won’t be coming back. Another great plus is that you can be a global brand. People from all over the world can come to your site and benefit from your knowledge. With a good user base and loyal visitors you can easily earn a good recurring monthly income. And you can do all this without selling a physical product of your own.
Many bloggers are moving from the straight posts, to a more interactive community and learning environment. A great example of this is SEOBook.com and how Aaron Wall moved to his new business model. By setting up a private community, there becomes exclusivity to being a member, and people love to be a part of exclusive clubs. Having a subscription based business allows people to get great information they are seeking, from a community of members, and normally no long-term obligation. But if you can keep the content at a high level of value, people will keep subscribing and as the number of customers increases the amount you can charge could also increase
.
What you should be doing
This may sound like an easy business model, but it is still going to take a lot of work to build up to become number 1 in your niche. This model is all about building community, so that is all I need to be telling you to do. Build a loyal community, and you can dominate your niche. And that’s what business is all about, owning your passion.
